Description
René Lalique designed his "Gui" (mistletoe) vase in 1920, a fairly well known model which is not particularly rare, but I find this particular piece unusual as it is frosted with a light lime green patina. The combination is not frequent and works well. The motif is one of mistletoe berries and leaves. The shape is a classic bulb and the size is 17 cm tall (6 3/4").
"Gui" is photographed and described (photo 9) in Felix Marcilhac's large book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible"), on page 427 of the 2010 French printing under reference 948. The caption clarifies that it was made until the mid-1930's (it was removed from the 1937 catalogue) and never re-introduced later. The signatures are hard to read and photograph, as one must look at the base under bright light. They are R LALIQUE in raised block letters under the base and " Lalique France" etched manually (photos 8,9). The latter signature, which was the rule until 1914, was usually added to ulterior pieces when the molded signature was not completely legible (from Marcilhac page 210).
The condition is very good: No chip, break or even visible scratch. The patina remains mostly even with very few irregularities, occasionally some incrusted dirt. For a vase of this age, it is in better shape than most.
